“The Loreley” [Lorelei] (on Beer Steins.)

“The Loreley,” by Waterhouse.

The Lorelei (German: Loreley, German pronunciation: [loːʁəˈlaɪ]) is a rock on the eastern bank of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen, Germany, which soars some 120 metres above the waterline. It marks the narrowest part of the river between Switzerland and the North Sea, and is the most famous feature of the Rhine Gorge, a 65 km section of the river between Koblenz and Bingen that was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in June 2002. A very strong current and rocks below the waterline have caused many boat accidents there.

Lorelei is also the name of a feminine water spirit, similar to mermaids or Rhine maidens, associated with this rock in popular folklore and in works of music, art and literature. [Sourse Wikipedia]

“Merrily we sailed along
Though the waves were plenty strong
Down the twisting river Rhine
Following a song .
Legend’s faded storyline
Tried to warn us all
Oh, they called her “Loreley”
Careful or you’ll fall .

Oh, the stories we were told
Quite a vision to behold
Mysteries of the seas in her eyes of gold .
Laying on the silver stone, such a lonely sight
Barnacles become a throne, my poor Loreley .

[WG]

And the winds would cry, and many men would die
And all the waves would bow down to the Loreley .

And the winds would cry, and many men would die
And all the waves would bow down to the Loreley .

You would not believe your eyes, how a voice could hypnotize
Promises are only lies from Loreley
In a shade of mossy green, seashell in her hand
She was born the river queen, ne’er to grace the land .

And the winds would cry, and many men would die
And all the waves would bow down to the Loreley

And the winds would cry, and many men would die
And all the waves would bow down to the Loreley .

[WG]

.

Oh, the song of Loreley
Charms the moon right from the sky .
She will get inside your mind, lovely Loreley .
When she cries “Be with me until the end of time”
You know you will ever be with your Loreley .

And the winds would cry, and many men would die
And all the waves would bow down to the Loreley .

And the winds would cry, and many men would die
And all the waves would bow down to the Loreley .

And the winds would cry, and many men would die
And all the waves would bow down to the Loreley .

And the winds would cry, and many men would die
And all the waves would bow down to the Loreley.”  [end]

A poem :

I wish I knew the meaning,
A sadness has fallen on me.
The ghost of an ancient legend
That will not let me be.
The air is cool in the twilight
And gently flows the Rhine;
A mountain peak in the setting sun
Catches the faltering shine.

The highest peak still gleaming
Reveals enthroned in the air,
A Siren lost in her dreaming
Combing her golden hair.
With golden combs she caresses
Her hair as she sings her song;
Echoing through the gloaming
Filled with a magic so strong.

The boatman has heard, it has bound him
In throes of desire and love.
He’s blind to the reefs that surround him,
He sees but the Maiden above.
And now the wild waters awaken
Then boat and the boatman are gone.
And this is what with her singing,
The Lorelei has done.

A half liter porcelain stein of the lady. Ca. 1910.

RROEMER LOTR- MOST PROB .T-H

A blown glass roemer, most probably made by Theresienthal, showing hand painted scene of the Loreley as a mermaid.  AI believe that artistic license prevails here,  as I have never heard or seen her portrayed as one before.
