“Pewter Rules for Dummies,” & the Pewter Stein Collector’s Newsletter’s Index.

A pewter pokal, 16.5 inches, dated 1636 (very authentic and not a Weygang historismus piece) A presentation piece, but not indicated by anything on the piece. But the recipient would have known why!!  The names on the shield are all German knights  so it well may have come out of the “30 Years War.” [FWTD]

An excerpt (requested several times now) from my, “THE PEWTER STEIN COLLECTORS’ AND RESEARCHERS’ NEWSLETTER – NO. 8.”

“(Steve) It might be helpful if you would include a page in future newsletters titled “Pewter for Dummies.” I know this dummy would appreciate it. Thanks again for a nice piece of work.”             Dick Heckroth

Editor: Thanks for all those good suggestions Dick, but I’m not certain some of my readers would take well to being called “dummies!”  David Harr, well okay, but the rest maybe not!

So just for you Dick, here are some Steve’s “PEWTER RULES FOR DUMMIES” (and also for all you beginning stein collectors.) Here are SOME of the most important things to look for to help determine if a pewter stein / tankard / vessel is old or a newer reproduction / fake.

[1] CROSSED 7’S IN DATE – NOT USED BEFORE  1870.  THIS OCCURS A LOT !  A GREAT GIVE AWAY.

(NOTE: I have seen only TWO PERHAPS THREE  authentic antique pieces in the last few years with a “half of a crossed 7” . One  was a pewter charger  and it went from the left and stopped  right at the 7. and it was not just a scratch mark. The second is on the Schraubflasche (flask) shown below. I’d have to see this one up close and personal to make a final determination, but the rest of it looks to be as old as the 1776 date.

The third is shown below the Schraubflasche and it has a very unique way of crossing  the 7. Again on a pewter piece.

This  has a very unique way of crossing  the 7. Again on a pewter piece.

2] VERY SHINY INSIDE  AS LIKE A MIRROR   – LIKE IT WAS NEVER USED = IT PROBABLY WASN’T AS IT ISN’T THAT OLD!

[3] OR – THE INSIDE OF THE LID IS DARK, EXACTLY  LIKE THE OUTSIDE — ESP. ON RESERVIST (REGIMENTAL) REPRODUCTIONS.  THIS INDICATES CHEMICAL AGING.

[4] NO DENTS THAT ARE DISCOLORED ON BODY OR LID.

[5] NO DENTS OR WEAR MARKS ON THE BASE RIM  FROM PUTTING IT AWAY FOR 100’S OF YEARS –

[5B] ALSO ON THE THUMBLIFT (FROM SMASHING INTO LEDGES).

[5c]  OR FINIAL , OR THE SIDE OF THE LID (FROM SMASHING INTO LEDGES).

RE:  5 AN  UN-ROUND EDGE WITH LOTS OF HITS IS A GOOD “INDICATION”  OF OLD AGE  – BUT  NOT A GUARANTEE!

[6] NO MINUTE SCRATCHES ALL OVER THE BODY  (EXCEPT UNDER THE HANDLE)

IF POSSIBLE – ONE SHOULD ALWAYS LOOK AT A PEWTER  STEIN WITH A MAGNIFYING EYE PIECE.

[7] NOT MUCH WEAR (SCRATCH MARKS, NICKS ) ON THE BASE, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS FLAT .

This photo was taken of the bottom of an old Swiss wine can, but it should give the reader an idea of what No. 7 is trying to say. Blow the page up to 150% for better view of the wear, esp. at the edges

[8] HINGE IS VERY TIGHT –  WITH NO WOBBLE OF THE LID. THAT MEANS THE LID WASN’T OPENED MUCH.

HERE’S THE REPRO INDICATION PHOTO FOR  NO. 8, AND NO. 11.  NO HINGE WEAR AND NO DENT WHERE ‘LID STOP’ HITS THE HANDLE —  THIS PIECE , ON EBAY, WAS DATED “1846”  – SO AFTER 160 YEARS OF USE THERE WOULD BE SOME GAPS IN BETWEEN THE HINGES ! (AND IN GENERAL, THERE ARE  JUST “NO SIGNS” OF AGE!)

[9] NO SERIOUS OXIDATION AROUND THUMBLIFT;  OR AROUND THE SPOUT ON A SERVER WHERE CLEANING FINGERS  HAVE NEVER TOUCHED ON OLD PIECES.

A Circa 1810 tankard  with a good indication of the uncleaned / polished area just around the thumblift. One can also see the gaps between the hinge parts; not as wide a gap as those found on original 1600 and 1700’s pieces.

[10]  NO OXIDATION AROUND WHERE HANDLES MEETS THE BODY WHERE CLEANING FINGERS NEVER TOUCH.

[11] NO INDENTATION ON THE HANDLE WHERE THE LID STOPS (TO THE REAR OF THE HINGE) AND HITS THE HANDLE.

[12] THE STAMPED MARKS ARE INDISTINCT – AT LEAST  70  TO 90 % OF THE FAKE NEWER COPIES MARKS ARE UNREADABLE. MANY ARE ALSO TINY.

[13] THE PIECE HAS A LARGE RELIEF ROSETTE IN THE BOTTOM – SOME OLDER SERVING STEINS DID HAVE THESE  – BUT THE ORIGINALS  ARE ‘NORMALLY’ ABOUT THE SIZE OF A NICKEL UP TO THE  “INDIAN” SILVER DOLLAR, NOT A HALF DOLLAR TO A “REAL” SILVER DOLLAR SIZE !

[14] IF THE WORDING OR NAMES HAVE A BRIGHT CUT LOOK TO THEM, THEY HAVE PROBABLY BEEN ADDED LATER,  THE INSIDE OF AN ORIGINAL CUT / ENGRAVING SHOULD OXIDIZE THE SAME AS THE BODY AND NOT BE BRIGHTER !

[15] “VERY, VERY , VERY  FEW” MARKS OF “95%”  (OR OTHER NUMBERS CLOSE BY,  SUCH AS JUST BELOW) WERE EVER USED ON ANTIQUE PEWTER. SOME 1870-1900 STEIN LIDS ARE MARKED 90% ON THE SHANK., MEANING ONLY 10% OF THE MIX WAS NOT TIN!

[16] IF YOU SEE A SINGLE  WORD “ZINN”, “ETAIN”, OR “TENN”  STAMPED IT IS INDICATIVE OF NEWER PEWTER, SAY AFTER WW II.

OR FROM OTHER COUNTRIES THAT ANNOUNCE THE WORD AND INDICATE WHERE THE PIECE  WAS MADE:

[17] NO PEWTER “SCABS” (SCABBING) WHERE LIQUIDS OR FOOD DRIED ON THE SURFACE AND CAUSED IT TO “SCAB” (MY WORD)

[18] BE “VERY LEARY” OF ANY PIECE WITH THE MARKS STAMPED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE LID OR ON THE BOTTOM OF THE LID INSIDE. A FEW OLDER PIECES DO HAVE THESE MARKED THERE  !  JUST BE  LEARY – A LOT OF NEWER ONES DO TOO.

[19] OLD PEWTER OUGHT TO BE HEAVY! —  BE EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS WHILE  LOOKING AT LIGHT WEIGHT STEINS MARKED WITH DATES FROM 1810 TO ABOUT 1860. THE GERMANS MADE 100’S OF FAKES IN THE LATE 1800’S AND VERY EARLY 1900’S TO MET THE NEW DEMAND IN THE USA AFTER SEVERAL BIG PEWTER DISPLAYS WERE HELD HERE.

THE DATES OF COURSE MEAN NOTHING! REPEAT AFTER ME; THE DATES OF COURSE MEAN NOTHING!!

ABOUT 95% OF THESE WILL HAVE A WRIGGLE WORK SCENE ON THEM  TO ADD TO THE DECEPTION OF AGE. (A LOT NOT WELL DONE.)  MOST OF THESE HAVE A FLARED BASE AND BALL THUMBLIFTS AND CAN BE DISCERNED BY NOT HAVING  ANY AGE SHOWN ON THE INSIDE  BOTTOM OR INSIDE THE LID (No. 3 RULE ABOVE ) ALONG WITH ANY OF THE OTHER 18 “PEWTER RULES .”

Pewter stein=  Fake – This one is dated” 1708″ when this style was not even in existence  ANYWHERE!

This  lid is a good example of the kind made in the late 1800’s early 1900’s./ Type one.

Another fake.  Ca. 1890-1900’s,  with lots of wrigglework, Has the same flared out base , extremely light, and the lid is ” Fake- type two.”

.

Buying through the mail, say as on eBay?

Best thing is to ask for a guarantee to be able to send the stein back if not satisfied! The photo resolution to determine some of the above is just not that good with the size photos on eBay and many other web sites. ASK !!

(End of “RULES” )

PEWTER  NEWSLETTER INDEX

During the years 2006 and 2007 I wrote / edited ‘THe Pewter  Beer Stein Collector’s (and Researcher’s( Newsletters.”  These were a group of very informal essays along with supporting photos. There were 14 newsletters each with about 30 pages of “WORD” text; enough to fill up two large size binders when printed out. I have no time to duplicate all those pages  on this site. However, I did develop an index of all the articles by subject matter. I will post the index just below. Scroll through it and if you see any subject matter you wish more information on please email me through this site or at and I’ll be happy to copy it and email it to you.

An example of what kind and amount of information might be provided will be posted at the end of “The Index”.

Just obtained an interesting pewter tankard and trying to figure out “logo” on the front. Is stamped “Block Zin 1820.” Three stamps on the bottom. Any ideas?
